Lavender Fields Herb Farm Glen Allen, lavenderfieldsfarm.com or 262-7167
History: Stan and Nicole Schermerhorn owned the front acre and a half of a 20-acre farm where the couple loved to buy lavender from the farm’s proprietor. In 2000, Hurricane Isabel destroyed their favorite lavender hill, and the whole farm was put up for sale. The Schermerhorns purchased the property, and later an additional 17 acres, to create their nursery and onsite store.
Production Methods: Using a combination of techniques including greenhouses and raised beds, up to 25 seasonal employees and the Schermerhorn family harvest most everything by hand.
Specialties: More than 200 types of herbs and vegetables can be found on the farm, including peppers, eggplant, squash, cucumber, tomatoes, lavender, mint, oregano and lemon verbena. Be sure to grab some lavender ice cream or lavender lemonade and enjoy it along with the view of the Chickahominy River.
Where to find in RVA: All products are available for purchase at the farm, from honey to fresh produce, and a few of Lavender Fields’ herbs can also be found at Good Foods Grocery, Sneed’s Nursery, Whole Foods and Ellwood Thompson’s Local Market, among others.
