A Life in Transition

By the time he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1998, Edmund F. Ackell had lived an accomplished life. He was a doctor, a licensed pilot and the former president of Virginia Commonwealth University, from 1978 to 1990. But his wife, Judith Fox, has had to watch as these amazing abilities gave way to his crumbling memory and his increasing dependence on her. Her recently released book I Still Do uses Fox’s intimate words and photographs to capture Ackell’s changing life and the couple’s lasting bond in the face of daily challenges. Even though her husband often can’t remember they are married, she says, she at least knows he loves her.

On Nov. 4, Fox visits Barnes & Noble’s VCU location for a signing of her book.
