In recent years, Richmond has seen a rise in new bakeries. Turning out sourdough bread and buttercream-topped cupcakes, flaky croissants, sprinkle-studded cookies, and multitiered cakes, these bakers are sparking some serious sugary joy. Nearly as delicious as the wide variety of offerings these carb-heavy ventures encompass are the stories behind them.

Read on for a collection of fresh-baked pleasures and meet the people behind the mixing bowl.
