About Richmond Animal League
Since 1979, Richmond Animal League (RAL) has been finding homes for homeless dogs and cats in the Richmond area. Believing in the no-kill philosophy since the beginning, RAL is the area’s oldest no-kill shelter. Located near Chesterfield Towne Center, the facility can house up to 30 dogs and 60 cats and kittens at any one time. Since the RAL facility opened, they have helped and found homes for thousands of animals. Though there is now a staff of 15 full-time employees, RAL has always been led by a volunteer board dedicated to reducing euthanasia rates in our community. More than 300 active volunteers come to the shelter throughout the week to care for the animals. In 2009, they saw the great need for a low-cost, high-volume spay-neuter clinic south of the James River. And in 2010, an onsite clinic was opened. The Loving Spay & Neuter Clinic provides low-cost services to municipal shelters, rescue groups and private pet owners, as well as free services for feral cats. Free spay and neuter services are available for pet owners who meet low-income guidelines. The clinic is now performing 7,000 spay/neuter surgeries each year.
