Richmond Restaurant Group partners Jared Golden and Michelle Williams hope The Water Grill will give Carytown a boost.James Dickinson photos
"Carytown was missing a good seafood restaurant," says restaurateur Jared Golden. His solution was to open The Water Grill (3411 Cary St., 353-3411) in the former Karsen's space on July 31. The fifth restaurant Golden and Michelle Williams, his partner in Richmond Restaurant Group, have opened, The Water Grill offers a raw bar with shrimp, oysters, clams, mussels and crab legs, as well as other seafood, steak and vegetarian options. It has similarities to another of their restaurants, The Hard Shell in Shockoe Slip, but with lower prices, a larger outdoor patio, multiple bars and a more casual feel. The Water Grill's head chef is Patrick Harris, who previously served as executive chef in several Washington-area eateries — including Oya, a French-Asian fusion restaurant in D.C.'s Penn Quarter neighborhood — and ran a catering business. He is trying to use local farm goods and regional seafood and meats as often as possible, Golden says.
