More than 200 vendors will sell dishes like fried green tomatoes, along with tomato-themed jewelry, tomato preserves and many other items, at the 34th Hanover Tomato Festival on July 14. Admission is free and the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, rain or shine. Proceeds will benefit the Black Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Attendees will also have the opportunity to watch performances throughout the day and can observe entries for contests such as "Best Dressed Tomato" and "Best Tasting Salsa," among others. "Being as family friendly as we are sets us apart [from other festivals]," says Jennifer Godfrey, recreation coordinator for Hanover County Parks and Recreation.
