Ellie Basch's café on the first floor of the Corrugated Box Building in Manchester is aptly named. The surroundings at Savor are distinctive, and the food is flavorful and immensely enjoyable.
Breakfast, served from 7:30 to 11 a.m., includes baked goods (some of them vegan and gluten-free) and breakfast sandwiches, plus three styles of peanut-butter panini that are offered all day. Add coffee, tea or Mayan hot chocolate, and you're good to go.
A friend and I stopped in for lunch, which is served from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. We chose the soup of the day, a tomato basil. Thick and creamy, with just the right amount of spice, it came with two large, crisp pieces of bread, perfect for dipping. We also opted for Basch's Olivado Citrus Salad — mixed greens with avocado, grapefruit and orange slices, topped with lime vinaigrette. It was delicious and refreshing.
Savor offers a rotating selection of grilled-cheese sandwiches. The day we visited, it was bacon-wrapped meatloaf with Gouda on rye. The cheese was just melting as it arrived at the table, and the entire sandwich was enhanced by stone-ground mustard on one slice of bread and a roasted-red-pepper spread on the other. It was a well-balanced, flavor-packed sandwich.
Starting this month, Savor will be open until 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, serving small plates, beer and wine. My only lament is that I don't live or work closer to Savor so I could become a regular.
