The martial art of Capoeira goes back four centuries, it’s believed, when African slaves mixed with native Brazilian cultures and created a hybrid of dancing and simulated combat. During most First Friday Artwalk events, the Richmond group Capoeira Resistência demonstrates the art on Broad Street. Two martial artists, such as John Carter (left) and Cecilia Bull, spar while other participants keep a beat. On Oct. 9 to 11 at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, Capoeira enthusiasts will celebrate the 4th Annual Batizado, featuring a graduation ceremony for students of the martial art as well as demonstrations and workshops.
