Fred Kahwajy was born in 1911 in Missouri, but his family moved back to Lebanon when he was 3. Ten years later, in 1924, he moved to Richmond and entered St. Benedict Catholic School with Arabic as his only language. After learning English, Kahwajy accelerated through the school's seven grades, graduating in 1928. Today, as St. Benedict's oldest living graduate, the 99-year-old lives a block away from the school, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.
