Ben Dejarnette , a senior at Atlee High School, is a standout cross-country and track athlete who won a AAA state title in the 3,200-meter run last year. For the past two years, he's served as editor in chief of his school's newspaper.
Emma Dejarnette , also a senior and a track athlete at Atlee High, is the state AAA's girls' pole-vault champion (indoor and outdoor) and a Hanover Scholar (earning a GPA of 4.0 or better while taking advanced courses).
Carter Stephens , a Collegiate School senior, has been swimming since age 8 and qualified for the USA Junior Nationals last summer, in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Stephens will continue her swimming career at Princeton this fall, where she plans to focus on international relations or business.
Darien Brothers , a senior at Benedictine High School, says his greatest athletic moment was when he and his fellow Cadets defeated then national-No. 1 Oak Hill Academy in December 2007. This fall, the 6-3 shooting guard and 3.5 GPA, honor-roll student will join the University of Richmond squad.
Kelsey Sawyer , a senior at Maggie L. Walker Governor's School, was voted 2008-2009 District Player of the Year by field-hockey coaches in the region. Sawyer also won first place in a 2008 Congressional art contest for a self-portrait that will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
Kathleen Lautzenheiser , a junior track and cross-country athlete at Midlothian High School, was named Runner of the Year for the state's Dominion District in 2008. In the classroom, Lautzenheiser is chasing academic achievement through a variety of Advanced Placement classes.
Brianna Dillard , a senior at Hermitage High School, has maintained a 4.2 GPA and volunteered at U-Turn Sports Peformance Academy while playing basketball for the school. In her junior season, she finished 14 games with double-digit points and rebounds. She's going to Gardner-Webb University on a full athletic scholarship.
Garett Patterson , a senior at Monacan High School, is heading to Duke University this fall on a full scholarship as a defensive back. In addition to his regular coursework, Patterson's been taking extracurricular computer classes (his academic passion) since his junior year.
Michelle Foley , a Godwin High School senior, has achieved first-team All-District and All-Academic status (a GPA of 3.0 or better) in both basketball and field hockey. Last summer, she was one of two Godwin students chosen to participate in Virginia Girls State, a weeklong study of the state's governmental structure.
Kristin Carpenter , a senior at Hanover High School, was a sophomore when she committed to play volleyball for the No. 1-ranked women's volleyball program at Penn State University. Off the court, she's All-Academic, a Beta Club member and a Hanover Scholar.
