For many Richmonders, it's not Thanksgiving without a taste of cranberry sauce. We consider cost, taste and convenience in this local, not-at-all-scientific survey of the cranberry.
Cheapest: Ocean Spray Jellied Cranberry Sauce, $5.58 for six 14-ounce cans at Sam's Club. But those telltale ridges will shatter any illusions that this stuff is homemade.
Reliable: A quart of cranberry sauce made at Olio costs $9 serving a family. This dish won't be mistaken for canned jelly, but you'll have to spend a bit more for the luxury of not cooking.
Homiest: Costco charges $4.99 for a 3-pound bag. Half a pound of berries serves six people, but you will have to spend some time in the kitchen.
Convenient: Sally Schmidt, personal chef and owner of Sallyfood, will deliver a quart of her cranberry relish to your door for $15. It could keep overwhelmed cooks from going over the edge.
