We’re plenty far into that time of year where we’re spending more time outside, getting extra sun and needing cosmetics that hold up to the heat. So, I decided it’s time to update my list of beauty must-haves for summer.
Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Flared Hydrofuge waterproof mascara in Very Black
If you’re going to be spending a day by the pool or on the beach, waterproof mascara is an absolute must-have. Along with lip gloss, it’s about all you’ve got to keep you pretty as you get in and out of the water. This stuff is as good as it gets. First, it’s not clumpy, but does add volume and tons of glorious length. Second, it holds up if you go in the pool or ocean.
Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Lotion Sunscreen SPF 30
Even though I love spray-on sunscreen, I’m a firm believer in starting the day with a head-to-toe coating of lotion sunscreen. This is my new fave. The sunscreen is layered with ribbons of moisturizer so your skin feels soft, not gross and gritty. Plus, its tropical scent smells amazing.
Neutrogena Clear Face Break-Out Free Liquid-Lotion Sunblock SPF 30
I used to be able to see the clogged pores appearing on my face from the moment I arrived home from the pool. Not so anymore. This product keeps my skin sunburn- and breakout-free.
Neutrogena Body Clear Body Spray
Let’s face it, if you’re hitting the pool and/or the gym in this 100-degree heat, you’re probably going to get at least a few clogged pores on your back or chest. Spraying this stuff on twice a day helps combat the oil.
Banana Boat Protective Dry Oil UltraMist Sunscreen
When I reapply sunscreen I prefer a spray, and I’ve found I get more out of this dry oil spray than the typical spray-on suncreens that seem to last me about a day by the pool before running out. Plus, this stuff has a light banana-coconut smell that’s refreshing and fun.
Hard Night Good Morning Detox Mineral Masque
Even with my face-specific sunscreen, after a day of sweating outside I still like a good mask. It makes my skin feel clean and oil-free. I’m falling strongly for this clay-based one that seems to pull out impurities, leaving my skin feeling fresh. Plus, while supplies last, this product and all the Hard Night Good Morning items are 20 percent off at Ellwood Thompson's. It’s also available at Whole Foods.
Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer
I like to lighten up my face product in the summer, and this product provides the right amount of coverage without feeling heavy. Plus, it’s oil-free, contains SPF 20 and a bit of shimmer to make your skin look pretty in the summer sun.
NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna
If you’re reapplying your face sunscreen as you should, you’ll probably want some bronzer to add a bit of sun-kissed beauty to your skin. This shade seems to work on a ton of skin tones — it’s not too light or dark, meaning you get color but your skin doesn’t look dirty. I like adding a hint ofNARS Blush in Angelika to the apples of my cheeks to complete the look. If you want to add some color to your body, see my post about Tan Towels. My love affair with them continues. Also, here are some tips on applying them, as well as other self tanners.
