If you want to chase away the winter blues, Heidi Story suggests taking up a vintage but increasingly trendy art: sewing. Story, who is closing her self-named Carytown boutique this month, is now focusing full-time on her personalized sewing classes. A new round begins this month, including a brand-new intermediate course in crafting a travel handbag.
"Every class I do, you come out with a product," says Story, who teaches all the classes. "I try to tell [students] a lot of the industry secrets I learned when I was in New York."
Story adds that this skill set is no longer considered old-fashioned. "Ever since Project Runway has been on, people are more interested in sewing," she says. "They used to think sewing was boring and very antiquated. Now they see sewing as something fun and creative."
For Story, these classes are a childhood dream come true: "I used to hand-sew and make all the Barbie-doll clothing for the kids in the neighborhood," she says with
a laugh.
Classes range from one day to seven consecutive weeks and from $25 to $215. For more information, call 353-0994 or visit heidistory.com.
