Carytown businesses are struggling to weather declining foot traffic, but some shops are exploring creative ways to stay afloat. At Bang-On ( 3035 W. Cary St. ) in Carytown, owner Chuck Mugler is cutting back his inventory of custom tees and consolidating space to make room for Kitsch , a vintage-clothing and consignment retailer owned by Chaz Harpman. "It was just a smart way to save money on rent while bringing in new customers," Mugler said. Kitsch buys and sells gently used clothing at discount prices, giving 40 percent of the profits to the product's original owner after the sale.
