In an effort to give voice to community members who are battling mental illnesses, Daniel Rigsby, adult recovery program manager with Henrico County's Mental Health and Developmental Services, created a one-minute module for radio station WRIR-97.3 FM that highlights personal experiences. "The primary mission is to address the stigma associated with mental illness and give people who've experienced mental illness a way they can contribute," Rigsby says of the modules that air at 3:01 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The segments are read by Richmonders who have mental illnesses. The National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare recently awarded Rigsby the Reintegration Award for Advocacy. Of the $5,000 that accompanied the award, $2,000 was given to WRIR for programming costs and $3,000 went to Rigsby's practice for promoting local events focused on mental health recovery.
