In the wake of the late-2000 global financial crisis, the Virginia Department of Health's AIDS Drug Assistance Program experienced unprecedented demand because of factors such as unemployment and loss of insurance. In response, the program collaborated with community partners, health care providers and pharmaceutical companies to ensure medication access, and by Sept. 30, state health commissioner Karen Remley says, all of the people currently on the waiting list will be enrolled and receiving their HIV-treatment medications.
