A narrow, gravel pathway lined with antique fencing and vintage stone sculptures leads visitors to a lavender-scent-infused and treasure-filled cottage: The Moss House .
The boutique is a dream come true for owner René Matthews (above), featuring her handmade line of gemstone jewelry, in addition to handcrafted wine accessories, antique furniture, stained-glass art, sculpted garden plaques by George Carruth Studios and other rare finds.
"It's what I've wanted my whole life," Matthews says. A jewelry artisan, Matthews once displayed her wearable art while she worked part-time at The Moss House. Last July, her former employer decided to sell the business, and Matthews jumped at the opportunity for ownership.
Matthews' flair shines in the boutique. Her jewelry line features crystals, Czech glass and freshwater pearls. "[Jewelry-making] is my creative outlet," she explains.
All four of the cottage's rooms evoke a specific theme. The Baby Room — filled with children's clothing, toys and bedding — is undergoing a makeover. Matthews commissioned local artist Amy Roberts to paint a mural covering almost two walls with a dreamy "Cat and the Fiddle" image, complete with the cow jumping over the moon. The Moss House is located at 3347 Anderson Highway in Powhatan. For more information, call 598-3131.
