Each Machine Era Co. bottle opener has been custom-made from cold-formed steel and finished with a gun-barrel-black patina. "The idea of the design is something sturdy that's not going to wear out like an aluminum bottle opener," owner Adam Hogsett says. The tools, produced in Richmond, are laser-engraved with a whale drawing by local graphic designer William Godwin. "It's a throwback to scrimshaw artwork that [whalers] used to do on animal bones," Hogsett says. The openers are available at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and Need Supply Co.
