Decorating for Halloween doesn’t need to be scary — or mass-produced. It’s easy to add some spooky, artistic style to your décor with these two handmade skull items from Orange in Carytown. Both are crafted by local artisans.
Custom and individually made from recycled concrete, the skull (pictured, $57) is by Concrete Ideas. Stan Webb, the maker, notes how the skull’s pitted surface evokes “decaying bone.”
The skull is nearly 7 inches tall, and its opening is perfectly suited for a candle or a small pile of candy.
The skull is also available in white, and both versions draw interest with engaging textures and an eerily-cool sculptural style.
Skull pillow covers by RVA Pillow Works also deliver macabre flair. Featuring a vintage illustration of a skull hand-printed in ink on natural duck canvas, the covers are offered in a various sizes.
Pictured is a 12-inch-square design for $17.50.
Orange is at 3007 W. Cary St. They’re open Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
