Mixing humor and rock ’n’ roll can be a tricky proposition. Thankfully, Jim Heath — aka Rev. Horton Heat — excels at both, with tricked-up hillbilly guitar and tongue lodged firmly in cheek (“Nurture my Pig,” “Big Little Baby”).
Heat’s revivalist sound is rooted in the classic propulsion of rockabilly, but he and his bandmates take it to another level live, with a fervor normally reserved for a congregational pew — having a “Psychobilly Freakout,” they call it. You might not get saved, but you’ll be sated.
Rev. Horton Heat brings his “Full Custom Gospel Sounds” to The National on Dec. 9, along with Nashville Pussy, Unknown Hinson and Lucky Tubb.
7:30 p.m. $19.50 to $23.
