Young couple Jenny and Elias stay in a bed and breakfast while struggling to keep their relationship alive. Mertis, the B&B’s owner, has amassed a collection of thousands of inanimate objects, from figurines to home décor. Under these objects’ watchful eyes, the troubled lovebirds try to find connection in lives burdened with loneliness.
This is the synopsis of “John,” directed by Rusty Wilson of the Cadence Theatre Co., on stage now at Virginia Repertory’s Theatre Gym.
Wilson says, “In my view … the play is really about ghosts, whether we think of them as serious apparitions in another level of existence, or the ghosts of our relationships.”
