Edge of a Dream by Tom Chambers
Greetings, one and all, but before the weekend begins in earnest with much to do and see, let’s take some time to look at pictures at an exhibition. And consort with a mermaid. At 7 p.m., Saturday, begins Candela Books + Gallery’s production of the Cirque de la Candela, at 214 W. Broad St. This is the third such event and they’re always quite a bit of fun.
Last year, for reasons I’m not quite clear about, I ended up giving a full-voiced rendition of the theme from Gilligan’s Island. This scene involved comedians from the Coalition Theatre, but I don’t remember why.
This Cirque closes the annual UnBound! Show that this year collected work from 39 photographers from all over the photography map in an adventurous exhibition. UnBound! raises funds to create a Candela Collection that will be then donated to a worthy art institution.
This year’s event will offer food and drink fit for the funway including the renowned Back Alley Chicken — it’s prepared in the alley out back by photographer Terry Brown — and other amusement park features including, alive, alive absolutely a-live! — a mermaid, burlesque with Deanna Danger, tarot readings from Camille Vegas, a Pool of Sorrows (title of my forthcoming autobiography), door prizes, a raffle, weight-guessing (um, I'm skipping that one) and “sundry stupendous surprises,” as Candela’s director Gordon Stettinius puts it.
Music will be provided by those madcap makers of mirth and merriment, the Happy Lucky Deuce, Barry Bless and Pippin Barnett.
Event tickets ($40) are available in advance and at the door. Call 225-5527 to purchase tickets. Raffle tickets ($10) are also available in advance and at the event. The raffle will be drawn at 8:30 p.m. the night of the party. You must be present to win!
