Whether you choose to be elevated above the street or tucked away in an outdoor nook, patio dining is the Richmond way to start a summer weekday or weekend morning. Combining the most important meal of day with a little people watching is why I like these spots.
Cary From Above
Enjoy breakfast during the work week or Sunday brunch on C Street's portico, which commands a lofty view of Carytown. Try the vegetable frittata, which combines zucchini, peppers and mushrooms with Parmesan, or the Carbonara Pizza topped with pancetta and egg to begin the day on a delicious note. 3325 W. Cary St., 355-2200 or cstreetrva.com
Picture Perfect
Amuse at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts offers the best scenery in the city as well as an incredible jumbo lump crab cake with horseradish cream during Sunday brunch. The dish is artfully presented with a bit of bacon for good measure. And don't forget the sparkling cocktails. My favorite is the Ginger Sparkler. 200 N. Boulevard, 340-1580 or vmfa.state.va.us
Drop Before You Shop
Before embarking on a day of shopping, stop by the patio at Baker's Crust Café in Short Pump Town Center. Order the Margherita Omelet with house-made mozzarella, fresh basil and roasted tomatoes — a combination that appeals to vegetarians and nonvegetarians alike. Breakfast is served every day.

Park Yourself
Order a café au lait and a cinnamon roll from Crossroads Coffee and Ice Cream in South Side, and then sit and watch the parade of bikes, cars and people go by. Customize your café strength by selecting from a variety of Rostov's or Blanchard's coffee blends. Once the coffee is chosen, the barista fills the rest of your cup with steamed milk. Heaven across from Forest Hill Park, every day. 3600 Forest Hill Ave., 231-2030 or crossroadsrva.com
Riverside Respite
The Boathouse at Rocketts Landing sports a spectacular view of the city skyline from its perch above the James River. Their blood-orange mimosa delights with its bright color and not-too-sweet juice. The Southern Pecan Waffles with Virginia-made maple syrup satisfy. Or try the Grilled Shrimp and Bacon Sandwich.
