Sweet Frog owner Derek Cha is already a force in the region’s frozen yogurt business, but Cha’s newest venture, Zzaam! Fresh Korean Grill, may make him a force in the food-truck business as well. He launched Zzaam! (which is available for franchise) in April to introduce Korean barbecue to Richmond’s food-truck faithful. You’ll find it weekly at Huguenot Road Baptist Church in Chesterfield County, where I gave it a try.
I ordered the bul don (spicy pork) bowl ($7.95). The sizeable serving of pork on a bed of rice was complemented by onion, carrots, zucchini, corn, egg, broccoli, bean sprouts and a sprinkle of nuts. The Korean sauce drizzled atop the dish was just spicy enough to enliven the blander veggies and egg. I loved the combo of tastes and textures.
My second dish, the dak (chicken) taco ($2.50), came with lettuce, cheese and spicy mayo. A refreshing hint of lime provided an interesting contrast to the spark of the mayo, a small highlight for a taco that tasted otherwise standard. Though not bad, Zzaam!’s taco was nothing special when compared to other taco offerings on the food-truck scene. Nonetheless, if you’re a Korean barbecue newbie, Zzaam! makes for a tasty first foray.
