Local Purveyor: Rock Castle Farm, run by Stu and Denise Doetzer Location: Goochland County History: The Doetzers have lived on their 75-acre farm for 30 years. Their family farm became a viable business in 2005 as a second career for them after retirement. Specialty : The Doetzers farm about 4 acres, where they raise their vegetables organically and sustainably. Vegetables vary by season and include shiitake mushrooms, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, kale, onions, squash, cucumbers, cabbage, elephant garlic, basil, rosemary, thyme, cilantro and parsley. They also raise free-range chickens for both eggs and meat and keep honey-producing bees. Production Methods: Sustainable and organic, with many heirloom varieties. Chickens are free-range, antibiotic-free and processed on the farm by respectful hands. Their farming techniques are a natural progression from Stu's career as a conservationist, horticulture professor (he started the J. Sargeant Reynolds program in 1976) and landscape contractor.
