Historical photo from the National Archives Collections
"They made it out of a bedsheet and colored pencils," Jerry Landrum says of the flag that his father, Richmond native James Landrum, is waving in this 1945 photo of his liberation from Japanese POW camp Omori. Jerry tracked it down in a Washington Navy Yard warehouse last year. "I'd been looking for it since about 1966," he says. Unveiled in April, the flag is now on display at the Virginia War Memorial ( vawarmemorial.org ), in its first outing since that day in 1945.
