One in every three people older than 2 is classified as obese in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. To combat this trend, Jeannette Cordor founded the nonprofit The Faces of HOPE (Healthy Options for Personal Empowerment) in 2007. Virginia's first in-home and group childhood obesity prevention program will hold its second annual Saving OurSelves 5K Walk to Wellness on May 19 from 9 a.m. to noon at Chimborazo Park in Church Hill. Proceeds (registration is $35 for adults, $10 for children) will help fund weight-management programs, nutrition education classes and a girls' leadership academy. "Our goal is just to get the community up and moving," Cordor says. For more information, call 592-4751 or visit thefacesofhope.org .
