"I feel like a movie star," Sharon Parker says on the day of her makeover photo shoot. "I'm not used to being catered to." Style consultant Diana Seaman met Parker through Goodwill Industries, which has assisted Parker in her job search by helping her update her resume, polishing her interviewing skills and offering networking support. Parker, a Richmond resident with a Master of Business Administration in human resources management, has been taking temporary assignments with several staffing agencies, but she's looking for a full-time position in human resources. (Parker can be reached at sharonparker2000@yahoo.com .) She says that she saw the makeover as a way to nudge herself out of her comfort zone and boost her fashion sense. "It's been a ‘wow' moment for me," she says.
Hair
Master stylist Eric Michael Steward of La Bella Hair Studio lightened Parker's hair, using color from Schwarzkopf in autumnal shades of gold, amber and toffee. "We wanted to bring out the gold tones in her skin," he says. Steward also flat-ironed her hair and blew it straight for a polished look. "But she can also go back to her natural texture," he says.
Makeup
Steward accented Parker's facial features with highlights around her cheekbones and along her brow bones. He shaped her brows and opted for beige, eggshell and bronze colors for eye shadow. To make her eyes stand out in the photo, he applied false lashes. For lips, Steward chose a color close to Parker's skin tone, accented by some pink gloss. "If women of color use too many bright reds or rich purples, it sets everything off balance," he says.
Clothing
Seaman put together Parker's outfit from items at Goodwill's Second Debut boutique in Carytown (3114 W. Cary St., 254-7623). The black dress by Tahari is part of a two-piece outfit that still had its original retail tag of $158 but was priced at $31. The jacket ($13) is by Trenz by Theresa Renz, and the shoes ($12) are by Nine West. Parker is also wearing a necklace ($22) from Penelope at the Creeks (9972 Brook Road, 266-7300) and a silver watch ($125) by Brighton from the Barbizon collection, also from Penelope. She's carrying a "Glen Plaid Hobo" bag ($199) from Talbots (6223 River Road, 288-0020). "This is what I call a power look," Seaman say
