A wealthy heiress, a down-on-his-luck suitor, an anti-Semitic businessman and a vindictive moneylender are at the center of the tragicomedy “The Merchant of Venice,” part of the 18th annual Richmond Shakespeare Festival at Agecroft Hall.
Audience members can imagine themselves as contemporaries of the playwright while strolling the grounds of the Tudor-age mansion. The look of “Merchant” will be eclectic, says Jan Powell, director of Quill Theatre’s production, which runs from July 7 to 31.
“It will be based in the Italian Renaissance with elements from other eras to gently hint at the universal relevance of the show.” $30. 7:30 p.m. 340-0115 or quilltheatre.org.
