A noted authority on the way comics work, Scott McCloud has made a career of outlining the theory underpinning the medium in clear and practical terms — using his own comics to explain comics — via his essential 1993 book Understanding Comics, and two follow-ups. Now, with the release of The Sculptor, his graphic novel about a sculptor who makes a deal with Death that shortens his life in exchange for artistic ability, McCloud will give a talk April 6 at VCU’s Grace Street Theater. A question-and-answer session moderated by Richmond-based comics historian Christopher Irving will follow. 7 p.m. Free. 828-0593 or arts.vcu.edu/gracestreet.
