Matthew E. White (Shawn Brackbill)
So much for the sophomore jinx.
After winning national plaudits for his debut 2013 disc, Big Inner, Richmond's Matthew E. White released another impressive effort, Fresh Blood, on Spacebomb Records this year. It earned him a coveted last-season spot on The Late Show with David Letterman, and inspired comparisons ranging from classic Motown to the New Orleans sound of Allen Toussaint to '70s singer-songwriters.
There is also a stylistic connection to fellow hometown hero D'Angelo; like Black Messiah, White's Fresh Blood is soulful, lush, idiosyncratic, funny ("Rock & Roll is Cold") and often willfully obscure.
It almost earns the alternate title of “White Messiah.” Matthew E. White and his band will bring it all back home to the Broadberry on Nov. 13. 8 p.m. $12 to $14. 353-1888 or thebroadberry.com.
