Twenty years ago, Suwit "David" Roygulchareon opened Beauregard's Thai Room in a circa-1870s townhouse. "When I moved to Richmond [in 1993], the food was a little bit behind New York," Roygulchareon says. "That is why we opened up as PGT Beauregard. The original name honored a Southern general, and the bottom floor of the restaurant served Continental cuisine. We only served Thai food on the second floor. But people wanted Thai food, so we dropped the other menu and the ‘PGT.' "

New World Cuisine Beauregard's is known for its patios; there are two. The one out front has downtown views, while the back patio brims with flowers and a stocked koi pond in warm weather. The menu includes plenty of traditional Thai dishes, like spicy drunken noodles and crispy calamari, but David suggests that guests order fish. Salmon comes either steamed in bamboo or roasted and sliced to resemble a flower. Be sure to ask for the secret spicy basil sauce for dipping.
