In need of dinner inspiration? Estilo's grand re-opening is tonight, showcasing a menu that should please the most ardent of carnivores, those most intolerant of gluten and the seekers of originality. We can all thank Owen Lane for that.
Lane, the executive chef and co-owner of The Magpie, is now executive chef and co-owner of Estilo, shifting the Near West End restaurant's original South American focus to one of Latin-inspired, locally sourced creative plates packed with flavor.
"In getting to know [Owen] and seeing some of the specials at The Magpie with Latin influence, it just made sense," Estilo co-owner Jessica Bufford says of the collaboration. "What he wanted to do has blended so easily and seamlessly into what we wanted, and what we want for the future of this place."
Lane's menu will rotate seasonally — perhaps even more frequently — and includes small, medium and large plates, many of which are gluten-free and exemplify Lane's prowess with pork, poultry, beef, rabbit and rare meats. Expect pig head tamales with butternut squash mole; rabbit pozole with hominy, lime and avocado; roasted goat with masa cake; and rotisserie chicken with sea island red peas. For those waiting for brunch news with bated breath, Bufford says it's certainly a possibility.
The cocktail menu — revised under beverage director Scott Harris' care — includes a few classics like piscos and fresh margaritas but is utilizing more house-made syrups and many of the food menu's purveyors for a stronger connection between the food and beverage programs.
"As we became friends [with Owen] and talked about it all more, it was just a no-brainer," says Bufford.
Estilo is located at 7021 Three Chopt Road and is open Monday through Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with extended hours for the bar.
