Add Anne Holton’s name to the list of prominent Virginia Democrats who have endorsed Levar Stoney for Richmond mayor.
Holton, Virginia’s former secretary of education, announced her support for the former secretary of the commonwealth in a campaign release on Monday. She had previously donated $500 to Stoney’s campaign and hosted an event for him at her North Side home in June.
“I have been closely watching the race to choose our next leader,” Holton stated in the release. “It is clear that Levar Stoney is the candidate most prepared to lead our city, and its children, into a prosperous future.”
Holton and Stoney served in Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s cabinet together for two and a half years. She resigned from her cabinet position over the summer, after her husband, Tim Kaine, was chosen as Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's running mate.
Holton joins several other state Democrats who have backed Stoney. They include McAuliffe, as well as Delegates Jennifer McClellan, Delores McQuinn and Lamont Bagby. Stoney has also received endorsements from the Richmond City Democratic Committee, the Richmond Education Association and the Home Building Association of Richmond, among others.
Clarification: This story has been updated to reflect the June event Holton hosted at her North Side home was not a fundraiser.
