Local shoe purveyors Saxon Shoes has launched its 24th annual Saxon Shoes for the Needy collection to benefit The Salvation Army. Donations of gently used shoes will be accepted through Dec. 24 at Saxon Shoes at Short Pump Town Center, and in Fredericksburg at The Village at Spotsylvania Towne Centre. The shoes will be donated to The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Richmond and The Salvation Army in Fredericksburg.
“It’s hard to believe we are in our 24th year of collecting Shoes for the Needy at Saxon,” says Gary Weiner, president of Saxon Shoes. “The program has stood the test of time amidst the many changes we have seen in our family, our store and our community.”
Saxon encourages participation from individuals and families as well as school groups, churches, businesses and other organizations. Groups can register online, and Saxon will give public recognition to any group that participates, along with promotional materials for the shoe drive.
Donations will be accepted at either store location in Richmond or Fredericksburg, or they can be dropped at one of Saxon’s participating partners including the Atlee High School Beta Club, Bell Creek Development Center, Bellgrade Dry Cleaners, Nolef Turns Inc. and SimVentions in Fredericksburg.

Throughout the holiday season, Saxon will host different events where participants can donate shoes. At the Spotsylvania Towne Center’s breakfast with Santa on Dec. 3, the public can bring their donations, and on Dec. 13 at Short Pump Town Center’s celebration with Rudolph, Short Pump Pals Kids Club event in Chick-fill-A, Saxon will be accepting donations.
The Weiner family opened Saxon Shoes in 1953 and continues to run the business, now one of the largest independent shoe stores in America.
