A drab, dysfunctional space in a Goochland County home was transformed into a bright, cheery and meticulously organized laundry room by Mason Hearn of HomeMasons. Hearn met the homeowners’ goals of creating a fun, attractive space with good task lighting, ample storage space for supplies, and features for hanging, drip-drying and sorting laundry. “It’s a family of five with lots of time spent in the laundry room,” Hearn says. “Their idea was ‘Why can’t we make the laundry room not about drudgery, but more of a space you like to be in?’”
Hearn integrated the washer and dryer into a unified system of storage solutions that provides space for vacuums, detergents, sorting baskets, clothes pressing and a laundry tub. Bright-red cabinets with translucent glass were chosen to match the laundry accessories and the homeowners’ chosen palette, seemingly inspired by Coca-Cola. Bar-grate shelving and tiles in various hues of black and gray give the space a sleek, clean finish.
Hearn designed a slender chalkboard for messages topped with a “Laundromat ” sign pointing to the laundry room. “They were willing to do something different and more fun,” Hearn says. “I have to give them a lot of the credit.”
