Remodeling the master bathroom of a second-floor condominium in the former Nolde Bakery in Church Hill was a delicate proposition for Tom Haines, owner of Haines Construction. His clients’ shower drain was in direct conflict with the kitchen wall of the unit below. Fortunately, condo management allowed Haines’ crew to center the drain by boring through the 6-foot concrete floor at a calculated angle to clear the face of the wall below. With the plumbing issue resolved, Haines was able to transform the bath into a more contemporary space with cleaner finishes and a spacious feel. “The bathroom was very plain and poorly laid out,” Haines says. “It had a large open space in the middle that just didn’t work.”
The bathtub was replaced with a glass-walled shower. Garden tubs, Haines notes, “are a grand idea, but things are trending smaller.” A closet was reconfigured into open shelving, with the rear wall painted in an accent color to add depth. A tiny vanity was discarded in favor of a larger cabinet with drawers and shelves, one of which hides the trashcan. Lighting was bolstered with new ceiling fixtures and a recessed can light in the shower.
