You can hear Nathaniel Rateliff’s Missouri roots in his rhythm and blues group, The Night Sweats. Once a missionary, then a folk singer, Rateliff has toured with groups such as The Lumineers and Dr. Dog.
His new band’s self-titled debut album, released in August, has Rateliff’s throwback voice combined with a foot-stomping, almost-gospel sound. (Don’t miss the single “S.O.B.,” performed Aug. 5 on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.)
During live shows, Rateliff is known to dance all over the stage, hoot and holler. See the spectacle at The National on Dec. 14 with Richmond’s Big Mama Shakes opening. 7:30 p.m. $20 in advance, $25 day of show. 612-1900 or thenationalva.com.
