What is Nest? From fine art, handmade jewelry to period antiques and kitsch, Nest is the place to find that perfect gift for even the most difficult people. Who is behind Nest? Mark Robertson, a native of Richmond, has been collecting antiques since he was 13. He has a background in interior design and men's fashion. His personal tastes run the gamut, but he has a strong passion for anything unusual or odd — and especially loves primitive and folk art. Marcelo Outeiro is originally from Uruguay, but spent most of his life in San Francisco. He moved to Richmond almost 10 years ago and developed a reputation for excellent design through his work at a local gallery and Rivah Flowers & Gifts. He is best known for his handmade jewelry. When did you open and why? We have been collecting for many years with the hope of one day opening our own shop. This dream was finally realized in mid-April when Nest opened at 3404 Semmes Ave. in historic Woodland Heights. Where are you located? Nest is located in a circa 1915 home in Woodland Heights. The home had sat empty for many years. Homeless people had camped out at the property, and it was generally considered an eyesore by the community. In 2012, the property caught fire and was nearly destroyed. A local investor purchased the property and saved what was thought to be a lost cause. We chose this location because we live two blocks away and believe strongly in this neighborhood. There is so much talent, so many local artists and crafters within Woodland Heights that we thought this would be a perfect location. Nest is one block from Crossroads Coffee, Parkside Café and directly across Semmes Avenue from the Patrick Henry School of Arts and Sciences. Where do you find your goods? Who do you carry? We source our antiques and collectibles from all over the East Coast. From auctions to estate sales, flea markets to yard sales, we are looking everywhere and every day. We also accept select consignments. In addition to the antiques, we carry a selection of arts and crafts from local craftspeople. "The Gallery" is also located within Nest. The Gallery is a beautiful space we've dedicated to art. We are planning on holding a new show every six to eight weeks. What do you specialize in? You really cannot put us into a category because of our breadth and depth of merchandise. We ask ourselves one question when we are considering an item: Would we purchase this for our home? If it meets this standard, we make it work somewhere in the shop. What do you love about Richmond's design scene? Evolution! Finally! We're not that same old city anymore.
