History: Fizzy, refreshing, packed with electrolytes and dating back to the 17th century, switchels — also known as “haymaker’s punch” — are making a modern, calming comeback in Richmond. Helming the nonalcoholic drink business is Brett Nobile, founder of Ninja Kombucha, who has partnered with entrepreneur Dan Curran and engineer Zach Jillani. In March, the trio launched The Haymaker Collective, offering switchels that feature hemp-derived THC, CBD and CBG. Curran says the CBG “provides what they call an ‘entourage effect’: It helps the beneficial aspects of both the other cannabinoids.” He describes their product as a unique alternative to alcohol with a focus on flavor and health benefits. “Our niche is trying to get people to retry it, where it doesn’t taste like weed in the can,” he says. “It also has such a low dose that it’s approachable.”
Specialty: The flagship flavor, Lemon Ginger Switchel, consists of lemongrass tea and apple cider vinegar mixed with housemade ginger puree, lemon, honey and salt. Curran says, “This improves your gut health [and] has anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants. I tell people it’s a kombucha without fermentation.” More flavors, along with seasonal offerings such as the soon-to-drop Peach Iced Tea Switchel, are on the way.
Production: The switchels are made locally and canned at Ninja Kombucha.
Where to Buy: Ninja Kombucha, Union Market, Ardent Craft Ales, Point 5, Libbie Market and Shields Market.
