One of the oldest memories I have of my granddaddy is riding in his pickup truck with a warm box of fried chicken and thick, crispy potato wedges in my lap. He’d take me to get lunch from this one country gas station, and I’d sneak a wedge on the way back to his house.
I dream about those potatoes constantly, but it never occurred to me that I could still get them. Turns out Wise Choice Gas & Convenience (1751 Ashland Road) is still serving up a hot bar of chicken-fried treasures daily. Go for lunch because the store runs out by day’s end.
Manakin-Sabot has diversified since those days — now there’s Yu’s China Bistro (23 Broad Street Road) to fulfill your sesame chicken and wonton soup cravings, and JJ’s Fresh Seafood (1606 Hockett Road) with all the steamed Chesapeake Bay blue crabs your heart desires. Across the street is Sunset Grill (1601 Hockett Road), a casual steakhouse with a bright patio and live music. Or for a proper country breakfast — such as cream chipped beef over biscuits — stop by Satterwhite’s (116 Broad Street Road).
