Avery's Branch Farms: Amelia, 561-1930 or averysbranchfarms.com
History: Tim and Joy Alexander founded their farm in August of 2007 and run it along with their six children. What started as a small cow-sharing program with other nearby farms has since expanded to selling pastured eggs, grass-fed beef, pastured pork and free-range chickens.
Production Methods: All of Avery’s Branch Farms’ products are GMO-free. When it comes to their raw milk, Alexander says they are meticulous regarding sanitation, and they let their cows roam freely in the pasture every day to ensure the production of high-quality milk.
Specialties: Avery’s Branch Farms specializes in raw milk, for which Joy noticed a demand based on customer feedback throughout Virginia. “Some of them simply want a clean, real[-tasting] milk that has not gone through the processes that unfortunately kill a lot of the good in milk,” she says. The farm produces 500 gallons of milk every week, which the Alexanders deliver along with their chicken, beef, pork and eggs everywhere from Williamsburg to Northern Virginia.
Where to get it in RVA: All products are available to order via the farm’s website, and the raw milk can be found locally at Good Foods Grocery, Ellwood Thompson’s Local Market, Strawberry Street Market and Tom Leonard’s Farmer’s Market.
