From an electric street car station to a car dealership, a parking lot, and now the $40 million origami-angled, zinc-clad arts lighthouse designed by Steven Holl Architects, the southwest corner of Belvidere and Broad streets forms an important Richmond gateway. VCU, which transformed its surroundings while becoming known for its arts school, long planned an iconic exhibition space.
In 2012, Richmond magazine depicted the ICA as a giant question mark on our cover when it was scheduled for a 2015 debut. The four galleries, 240-seat auditorium and lofty interior spaces, built with private funding, opened in April 2018.
