The Richmond Region
The greater Richmond region includes the city of Richmond and Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico counties. The Richmond MSA (metropolitan statistical area) includes the greater Richmond region, as well as Petersburg, Colonial Heights, Hopewell, and the counties of Amelia, Caroline, Charles City, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Goochland, King and Queen, King William, Louisa, New Kent, Powhatan, Prince George and Sussex.
Population
The population of greater Richmond was 927,248 people in 2010, which includes 316,236 Chesterfield residents, 99,863 Hanover residents, 306,935 Henrico residents and 204,214 people from the city of Richmond. The Richmond MSA includes nearly 1.3 million people, and the state of Virginia was populated by about 8,001,024 in 2010.

• 54.9 percent of the Richmond MSA population is between the working ages of 25 to 64, higher than the national average of 52.9 percent.
• 49 percent of the population is male, 51 percent female.
• The median age is 37.3.
• 86 percent of the area’s population age 25 or older are high school graduates. 21 percent have attended some college, and 32 percent are college graduates.
