Richmond magazine Senior Photographer Jay Paul captured this great blue heron enjoying a snack at Forest Hill Park lake on Aug. 1. Great blue herons stand roughly 4 feet tall and have wingspans of 6 feet, making them the largest herons in North America. They are common across Virginia, particularly in the coastal areas and along the Chesapeake Bay and James River.
