Richmond may not be known as a high-tech hotbed, but software executives Edwin Huertas and Alex Otañez are keeping busy developing custom mobile applications for start-up companies, Fortune 500 firms and government agencies.
Huertas is the chief executive officer and Otañez the chief operating officer at Shockoe Mobile Applications Development , a 4-year-old company that is riding a wave of demand for wireless applications. One of its customers is the rental division of Homes ( homes.com/rentals ), an online apartment guide that is part of Norfolk-based Dominion Enterprises.
"Mobile is a true extension of a company's brand. A mobile app has to be a representation of the company," Otañez says. Huertas says companies are intensely interested in migrating legacy systems and applications to a mobile environment. "Companies are very concerned about developing applications for different platforms. Shockoe was formed to develop applications that work on both [Apple's] IOS and [Google's] Android devices," Huertas says.
