Ryan Nobles, a WWBT-NBC12 reporter and anchor for the past seven years, made a move to the big time in October, taking a job as national correspondent for CNN Newsource, based in Washington, D.C. A service offered by the 24-hour cable news network, Newsource provides video and national reporting to 800 local TV stations (including Channel 12). When there’s a national event reported on your local newscast, it’s often coming from CNN or a similar service.
“When I started my career, D.C. was one of the places where I wanted to end up,” says Nobles, a New York native and Buffalo Bills fan. Richmond’s been great for him as a journalist, he adds, noting that “it’s a small city that played big,” particularly in politics. Virginia, especially Richmond, has been a presidential battleground, with many candidates paying multiple visits in recent years.
With the 2016 presidential race on the horizon, Nobles will no doubt be covering politics more than ever, but if there’s a major snowstorm in D.C., for instance, he could be reporting on that, too. “I’m a journalist first and foremost,” he says, and the new job “won’t be much different. It’s basically covering whatever needs covering,” except on a bigger stage.
