Three metro Richmond hospitals are ranked in the Top 15 in Virginia, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2016-2017 Best Hospitals list, released today.
Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center topped the ranks of hospitals in the metro Richmond area and also ranked No. 2 in the state, tied with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. VCU Medical Center topped the state rankings last year. Nationally, the medical center was No. 36 in orthopedics and No. 46 in nephrology, two of 16 categories of care that were considered.
Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Mechanicsville was fourth in the state and ranked 46th nationally in diabetes and endocrinology. Bon Secours Saint Mary’s Hospital was tied with two other facilities for ninth in the state.
Top facilities also were ranked at the metro Richmond level. Here are the metro area rankings, with areas of high performance at each facility:
- VCU Medical Center (high-performing in cancer, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, and urology; also high-performing in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip replacement and cancer surgery)
- Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center (high-performing in nephrology; also high performing in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip replacement and knee replacement)
- Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital (high-performing in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip replacement and knee replacement)
The online rankings allow you to dig into various categories of services offered at a facility to provide a snapshot of the quality of care on factors including level of nurse staffing, readmission rates after seven days and 30 days, and the rate of hospital-acquired infections. U.S. News says the rankings are a starting point, just one of many tools to use in choosing a healthcare facility. Assessments were conducted on 4,667 facilities. The list excludes VA and military hospitals.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, topped the national list.
