Cigarette smoking among college students has declined, but researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University recently published an article online in the Journal of American College Health showing that water-pipe tobacco smoking has increased by about 20 percent among non-cigarette smokers.
"Surprisingly, many [students] hold the belief that water-pipe tobacco smoking is less harmful than cigarette smoking because the water filters out the ‘bad stuff,' " says VCU investigator Aashir Nasim.
