Pantone has announced its 2016 Color of the Year. But wait, it’s not just one. For the first time in its 16 year history of selections, the color authority has named two: rose quartz and "serenity." It’s a blended approach.
“Joined together, rose quartz and serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, in the company’s announcement. These colors, Eiseman says, reflect “connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”
Pantone knows the power of color to change moods and lives and suggests that this year’s pink and blue pairing could alter common perceptions of male and female colors.
Gender notions aside, rose quartz and serenity mix well with others. I love how they look with dark greys, greige and lavender. They have a 1950s feel that’s quietly refreshing.
Together and alone, rose quartz and serenity do imbue certain calmness.
And they’re certainly more serene than last year’s murky marsala and 2014’s cloying radiant orchid. What do you think?
